The main theme for this album is contrast. Contrast between intimate, introspective moments and sounds, compared with the huge, grandiose sound and feel. Growing up in the Twin Cities, we’d often go up to Duluth as a family for short vacations. For whatever reason, this concept of contrast made me think of Duluth - there’s this definite small town feel to it, but at the same time, there’s these absolutely massive ships that come and go all the time, on this insanely huge lake.

For example, with the title track "Ocelli," the first minute or so is this really soft, quiet piano and subtle ambience, that slowly builds into a big driving part, and back down. Eagles Flight is another example where there’s the big, thick, full section 2/3 of the way through, then I just copied and pasted that one violin line for the end outro, and even thinned it out more than usual - almost makes it sound like a woodwind of some sort actually, rather than a violin. I just love that huge emotional spectrum - and the quiet, intimacy.

When writing this LP, I had recently had a Rhodes electric piano brought to my studio (babysitting it for a friend), and found that to be a big inspiration on some of these tracks.

I recorded a lot of the piano at John Hayes’ house on his piano - fun to have that sound and element with this - it brings a piece of correlation from our collaborative album to this as well.
